Travel Implications While on Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Welcome to Segue Immigration and Tours Ltd., your reliable partner for navigating the complexities of life in Canada, including the nuances of your Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). If you’re an international student who has completed your studies in Canada and is now working on your PGWP, understanding the travel implications is crucial. In this section, we’ll explore what you need to know when it comes to traveling while on your PGWP.

The Freedom to Explore
One of the perks of the PGWP is the flexibility it offers for international students to gain Canadian work experience after their studies. However, this flexibility also extends to travel opportunities within and outside of Canada. Let’s break down the key travel implications:
  1. Travel Within Canada
    • You are free to travel within Canada without any significant restrictions while your PGWP is valid.
    • It’s important to carry all your necessary identification and work-related documents, including your passport, PGWP, Social Insurance Number (SIN), and job-related papers when traveling within Canada.
  2. Travel Outside of Canada
    • If you plan to travel outside of Canada, it’s essential to ensure that your PGWP is still valid when you return.
    • Returning to Canada to resume your work after traveling is generally straightforward if your PGWP remains valid.
    • If you’ve submitted your post-graduation work permit application from outside Canada, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is typically issued upon approval of the post-graduation work permit.
    • However, for applications submitted from within Canada, a TRV is not automatically issued upon approval of the application. In this case, the applicant must submit a separate TRV application if their TRV has expired, and they would like to travel outside Canada and return.
    • It’s advisable to maintain a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if required based on your home country.

  3. The PGWP Travel Rationale
    • While on your PGWP, international travel can be for various reasons, including personal vacations, family visits, and business trips.
    • Keep in mind that PGWP holders are primarily expected to use this time for gaining work experience, and work should remain the primary focus.

  4. Permanent Residency Considerations
    • If you’re considering applying for permanent residency in Canada, consult with an immigration professional to ensure that your travel does not negatively impact your application.
