The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency in Canada.
Requirements for the Sponsor
You can sponsor your parents and grandparents if you meet these criteria:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You live in Canada.
- You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act.
- You can prove that you have the financial means to support the individuals you want to sponsor.
Minimum Income Requirement
The income requirement to sponsor your parents or grandparents in Canada varies each year. To demonstrate eligibility, potential sponsors must submit Notice of Assessment documents from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the three tax years preceding the application (2020, 2019, and 2018).
Requirements for the Sponsored Person
The sponsored person must be the parent(s) or grandparent(s) of the sponsor.
How to apply
Invitation to Apply
Express your intention to sponsor by submitting the “Interest to Sponsor” form when it becomes available through IRCC. Upon submission, you may receive an invitation to proceed with your application
Sponsoring your parents and grandparents begins with an invitation to apply. If you receive this invitation, it signifies that you have met the initial eligibility requirements.
Not Invited to Apply
Super Visa Option
If you have not received an invitation to sponsor your parents and grandparents, there’s another way to have them visit Canada. They may be eligible to apply for a Super Visa allowing them to stay in Canada for extended periods, up to 5 years at a time.

When invited to apply, you will need to submit two applications: the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application. Once both applications are approved, you’ll sign an undertaking agreement.

- Sponsorship fee: CAN$85. This is paid by the sponsor (you).
- Principal applicant processing fee: CAN$545. This is paid by the parent or grandparent being sponsored.

However, there are specific requirements and processes to follow:
- Federal government approval: You must first meet the federal government’s eligibility criteria for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program.
