New visa policies for Mexican citizens
September 19, 2024

As of February 29, 2024, the Government of Canada has announced significant changes to its visa policies for Mexican citizens, marking a new era in bilateral relations and easing travel between the two countries.
Canada and Mexico share a rich history of cooperation and a vibrant relationship. To further strengthen this bond, Canada has recently adjusted its visa policies for Mexican citizens. This move reflects a commitment to facilitating travel, boosting economic ties, and fostering cultural exchange between the two nations.
The recent adjustments to Canada’s visa policies for Mexican citizens introduce several significant changes:
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Under the new measures, Mexican citizens traveling by air with a Mexican passport now have the option to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). This applies to individuals holding a valid US non-immigrant visa or those who have possessed a Canadian visa within the past decade. The goal is to facilitate travel and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
- Visa Requirements: While the majority of Mexican citizens with US visas will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada, those not meeting the specified conditions will be required to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This strategic move addresses recent challenges related to asylum claims while maintaining mobility for Mexican citizens.
-
- Work and Study Permits: The application process for Mexican citizens seeking work or study permits remains unchanged. Access to various existing labor pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program, will continue to be available.
