Your Passport to Hassle-Free Travel to Canada

Most travelers need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport. But fret not, Segue Immigration and Tours Ltd. is here to guide you through the process and ensure your journey to Canada is seamless and stress-free.

Understanding the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. It’s a digital authorization linked to your passport, valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. In case you obtain a new passport, remember to secure a new eTA as well.

With a valid eTA, you can explore Canada for short stays, usually up to six months at a time, and it allows multiple entries, meaning you can return as often as you like during its validity. It’s important to note that eTAs are not required for travel within Canada.

However, having an eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. Upon arrival, a border services officer will verify your passport and other documents, and you must demonstrate your eligibility for entry.

Who Needs an eTA to Travel to Canada?

There are four categories of travelers when it comes to eTAs:

Travellers who need an eTA: Visa-exempt foreign nationals must obtain an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. Arriving by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships) does not require an eTA.

Travellers who may be eligible to apply for an eTA: Citizens from select visa-required countries may be eligible for an eTA for air travel to Canada. However, these travelers must apply for a visitor visa when arriving by land or sea.

Travellers who cannot apply for an eTA and need other identification: Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, require a valid Canadian passport. Canadian permanent residents must have a valid permanent resident card or travel document.

Special note for former residents of Canada – Permanent resident status does not expire; you may still have PR status if you once lived in Canada many years ago. Visa-required individuals, alien’s passport holders, and stateless individuals are also in this category.

It’s advisable to obtain an eTA before booking your flight to Canada.
What to Bring to the Airport
Once your eTA is approved, it is linked to the passport you used for the application. You must present this passport during check-in for your flight to Canada. The airline staff will scan your passport to confirm your valid eTA. If you don’t have one, you won’t be able to board your flight.
