How It Works?Category-based rounds are designed to invite candidates from the Express Entry pool who meet specific criteria, such as language proficiency, work experience, and education, to apply for permanent residence. These candidates are selected to fulfill the identified economic goals, adding a layer of specialization to the overall selection process.
The chosen categories for each year are announced in advance, ensuring transparency and clarity in the selection process.

- Trade Occupations
- Transport Occupations
- Agriculture and Agri-food Occupations
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for an invitation through a category-based round, candidates must meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry, including eligibility for one of the three immigration programs it covers. Additionally, candidates must meet all the specific requirements outlined in the instructions for that round.
Here’s a brief overview of eligibility for the selected categories:
French-Language Proficiency Category:Must achieve a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens.
Healthcare Occupations, STEM Occupations, Trade Occupations, Transport Occupations, and Agriculture and Agri-food Occupations Categories:Must have accumulated at least 6 months of full-time, continuous work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time work experience) within the past 3 years.
The work experience can be in a single occupation listed for the specific category, whether gained in Canada or abroad.
