What is an Open Work Permit?

An Open Work Permit is a government document that allows you to work for any employer in Canada. It provides you with flexibility and the chance to explore many employment opportunities.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for an Open Work Permit if you are:

    • Spouses or common-law partners: Individuals who are married to or in a common-law relationship with a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • International students: Graduates of Canadian institutions may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows them to work for any employer in Canada for a specified period.
    • You are a student who is unable to meet the costs of studies.
    • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates: Certain PNP streams may allow applicants to obtain an open work permit while awaiting their permanent residency application.
    • You are a refugee, asylum seeker, protected person or their family member.
    • You are a young worker participating in the International Experience Canada Working Holiday program.
    • You are working for a specific Canadian employer with an LMIA and experiencing or at risk of experiencing abuse in your job. 

How to Apply for an Open Work Permit

  1. Determine Eligibility: Ensure you meet the specific eligibility criteria for your category.
  2. Gather Documents: Collect necessary documents like passports, proof of relationship, medical exam results, and financial support.
  3. Submit Application: You can apply online through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal or by mail.
  4. Biometrics: If required, provide fingerprints and a photograph.
  5. Medical Exam: If necessary, undergo a medical examination.
  6. Wait for Decision: IRCC will review your application and notify you of the decision.
