Do You Need a Study Permit in Canada?

August 16, 2024

A Canadian study permit is a crucial document that allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. However, not everyone requires a study permit to study in Canada. Whether or not you need a study permit depends on your specific situation:

You Need a Study Permit If

    1. You are planning to study in a program with a duration of six months or longer. Most international students fall into this category, and a study permit is typically required for longer programs.
    2. Your program is less than six months, but you plan to extend your studies while in Canada. If you think you might extend your program or transition to another one, it’s advisable to apply for a study permit from the beginning.
    3. Your program is less than six months, but you want to work part-time on-campus while you study. In this case, you’ll need a study permit to be eligible for on-campus work.

You May Not Need a Study Permit If

    1. Your program is six months or shorter, and you don’t plan to extend it or work on-campus.
    2. You are a family or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by the Government of Canada.

Study Permit Requirements

If you fall into the category of international students who require a study permit, you must meet certain requirements to obtain one. The key requirements include:

  • Acceptance at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). You must first receive an acceptance letter from a DLI in Canada. This letter is your proof of enrollment and is required for your study permit application.
  • Financial Support. You’ll need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
  • No Criminal Record. You must provide a police clearance certificate or other documents to prove that you have no criminal record. In some cases, you may need to undergo a medical examination.
  • Intent to Leave Canada. You must prove that you intend to leave Canada upon completion of your studies. This can be demonstrated through a written statement or other supporting documents.
  • Application Process. The study permit application process involves completing the required forms, paying the processing fee, and attending a biometrics appointment if necessary. The process may vary based on your country of residence.
