Changes to the Startup Visa Program - Open work permits in 2025
October 29, 2024
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a significant update to the Start-Up Visa Program (SUV) in 2024: applicants can now apply for open work permits, enabling them to work in Canada for up to three years while developing their ventures.
New rules
With new regulations such as the introduction of open work permits, entrepreneurs now have greater flexibility and opportunities. Before this update, entrepreneurs could only get a closed work permit, meaning they could only work for their own business, which posed limitations on their ability to earn additional money. However, with the new open work permit option, entrepreneurs can now take on other jobs, which can help them earn extra income and in turn, support their business.
Streamlined application process
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is committed to making the Start-Up Visa Program more accessible and efficient, with faster processing times and clearer guidelines.
Who’s eligible for an open work permit?
To be eligible for an open work permit under the Start-Up Visa Program, applicants must:
- Have applied for permanent residence through the Start-Up Visa program.
- Have received an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) letter from IRCC.
- Intend to live outside of Quebec.
- Be an essential member of your entrepreneurial team.
It’s important to note that the open work permit is valid for up to three years and allows the applicant to work for any employer in Canada.
What if I already applied before October 3, 2024?
If you applied before October 3, 2024, you were likely eligible for a closed work permit, which limited your employment to your own start-up business. However, due to recent changes in the Start-Up Visa Program, you will now have the option to re-apply for an open work permit.
Note that it’s essential to apply for the open work permit prior to withdrawing your old application or its expiration date.
