Choosing the Right Designated Learning Institution (DLI) for Your Canadian Study Permit

September 5, 2024

Selecting the appropriate designated learning institution (DLI) is a critical step in the process of obtaining a Canadian study permit. The DLI you choose will significantly impact your overall study experience, so it’s essential to make a well-informed decision.

Why Choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

Selecting a DLI is more than just a bureaucratic requirement; it significantly impacts your Canadian educational experience:

  • Study Permit Eligibility: To apply for a study permit, you must have an acceptance letter from a DLI. Attending a non-designated institution could result in study permit rejection.

From December 1, 2023, post-secondary institutions will verify acceptance with IRCC to prevent fraud. A “recognized institution” framework will be introduced by fall 2024 for better services and priority study permit processing.

  • Quality Education: DLIs are held to specific quality standards, ensuring that you receive an excellent education in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Work Opportunities: Attending a DLI allows you to access various work opportunities, such as co-op programs and part-time jobs, which can enhance your overall experience.

IRCC is planning to reform the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program to align with immigration and labor market goals.
